San Gabriel Valley Eye Associates, Inc. Interview

By Interviewer at 01/26/09 09:35

Name of your website?

San Gabriel Valley Eye Associates, Inc.

Your name?

David Richardson, MD

Your Location (city, etc)

San Gabriel, CA 91776

Please give us a short summary of your website?

Designed primarily to educate my current patients (as well as those who might become my patients) about eye disease. The site posts frequently asked questions (as well as answers) about eye disease. Additionally, there are video animations of both eye diseases and procedures. A particularly popular video shows how cataract surgery is performed: http://www.sgveye.com/en/component/content/article/47-cataract-video/195-cataract-surgery-video?directory=91

What inspired you to launch your own website?

I realized that there were certain questions shared by most of my patients. By extension I figured that many people who were not my patients probably had the same question. By answering these questions and posting them to the web I hope to provide some additional benefit to those surfing the web with questions about the eye.

How did you decide on a name for your website?

It is the name of my ophthalmology practice.

What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?

Unlike other medical practice websites, this site's focus is on education rather than promotion of the practice. Yes, there is information about the practice, but this is really secondary.

What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)

I would like it to eventually have answers to the 100 most commonly asked questions about eye disease.

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

The more successful my practice becomes the less time I have to devote to the website. It is more a hobby and passion than a revenue generating site.

If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?

I would like to create an e-zine as well as add more video animations.

If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?

Probably not.

What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?

Site organization took a lot more time than expected.

What has been your biggest challenge?

SEO

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Not sure. I'm just now learning about web metrics and landing page optimization.

How has running your website differed from your expectations?

It takes a lot more time than expected.

How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?

It is now over a year old and I plan on keeping it up for the length of my career (hopefully another twenty-five years).

What is the most important question about eye disease that your site answers?

That is easy: "How do I choose my cataract surgeon?" This question is so commonly asked that the answer is on the site's homepage: www.sgveye.com

What is your website address?

San Gabriel Valley Eye Associates, Inc.
